The cattle population has grown from 58,000 after the wars of 1980’2 to the present 85,000.

Most of the cattle are managed in the rangeland pastoral areas of Buliisa, Kimengo, Masindi port, Kiryandongo, Mutunda and Bwijanga sub counties. These are mainly Sanga (Ankole cattle ) and Zebu.

Urban areas with high human population densities and small plots of land are gradually taking on the high yielding dairy cattle. The number of exotic dairy cattle and their crosses is estimated at 600.

There are two big beef ranches namely Kiryana run by the Privatization unit of the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.

There are about 20 individuals each with a ranch of between 300 and 800 head of cattle.
