Historical Background

Masindi gained a district status from Bunyoro District Administration in 1976. Masindi District is the one from which both Kiryandongo and Buliisa districts were curved

Location and Size

Masindi District is located in the Mid-western part of Uganda, with its headquarters 216 Kms away from Kampala.  It borders: Nwoya in the North, Kiryandongo in the North - East, Nakasongola in the South East, Nakaseke in the South –South East, Kyakwanzi  in the South , Hoima in the South West and Buliisa in the West.  The District is at an average altitude of 1,295 meters above sea level, situated between 10 22‘ and 20 20‘ North of the Equator, longitude 310 22‘ and 320 23‘ East of Greenwich.

Masindi District covers an area of 3,927.4 Sq kms and the District Perimeter is 378 kms.

The Royal Mile 
The royal mile is found in Budongo Forest Reserve-Masindi District.
Its known for its popularity as a traditional leisure stop over for Bunyoro's royalty,it is a superb birding spot with many west and central African species, It is also. a spectacular 1.6km road made by omukama Kabalega as military training ground for his army(Abarusura)it is. also the same route he used to escape the colonialists before he was arrested in Dokollo and Exiled in the Seychelles Islands

Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park lies within the Albertine Rift Valley, where the Victoria Nile plunges through a narrow gorge, creating the powerful Murchison Falls. 
The park is known for its diverse wildlife, including the "Big Five" (elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards, and rhinos, The Murchison Falls are a major attraction,forcing the Nile River through a narrow gorge also known as the world's most powerful waterfalls
