Masindi to get multi-million water project

Residents of both Masindi and Kiryandongo districts will soon receive a water project with support from the Ministry of Water and Environment.
Addressing stakeholders yesterday during a consultative meeting that was held at the district headquarters,the Assistant Commissioner under the department of water for production in the Ministry of Water and Environment,Eng.Ronald Kato Kayizzi, revealed that the Ministry in partnership with the African Development Bank (ADB)are working on the planned project dubbed bulk water supply for multi-purpose use and that they intend to get water from R.Nile to a huge tank that will be mounted at Kaduku hill that will serve two Sub-Counties for each district between Kiryandongo and Masindi.In Kiryandongo,they will consider serving Masindi Port Sub-County and Kigumba Sub-County while in Masindi district,the project will target Miirya and Kimengo Sub-Counties.
He noted that,they will treat domestic water that will be supplied in small urban places within the selected Sub-Counties.
Eng.Kato explained that,the biggest component of the project is to provide water for irrigation targeting small holder farmers and large scale farmers.
He added that,the project will also focus on catchment restoration of degraded wetlands since a number of them are dry.
The Assistant Commissioner also explained that, currently they are carrying out feasibility studies as well as consultations from various stakeholders.
Speaking in the same meeting,the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Masindi,Ms Tappy Namulondo urged the project implementers to consider lowering tariffs especially for the component of domestic water.
Speaking as he closed the engagement,the District Vice Chairperson who represented the District Chairperson Kassim Kabagonza,asked the team to consider covering the entire Kimengo Sub-County as the area is water stressed.
