Residents embrace wetland restoration campaign

In abid to restore the degraded wetland of Siiba source,the residents of Kityedo Village in Kitonozi Parish, Bikonzi Sub-County in Masindi district have today,welcomed the initiative of planting indegenous tree species as the main drive in bringing back nature which had for long been encroached by a section of residents along the buffer zone.
Led by their Vice Chairperson of Kityedo Village,Hellen Arac,the residents pleged to support the campaign through planting a number of trees so as to bring back nature but also to limit human wildlife conflicts.
She however,called for more community awareness about the dangers of destroying wetlands especially to the communities along the buffer zones.
Speaking as he launched the restoration campaign in Kityedo Village,the District Natural Resources Officer,Simon Akwetaireho,urged the Environment Officer to formulate Kityedo wetland community management committee inorder to tap into opportunities from development partners who are engaged in livelihoods and restoration efforts.
The Environment Officer, Olivia Nabukenya, said that the target is to restore about five hectares of the wetland.
She noted that,the focus will be to plant indegenous tree species and also fruit trees.
