Masindi District Councillors have raised concern over the increasing theft of motorcycles in the district,with reports that some riders have been injured or killed by suspected armed robbers.

The concern was raised during Monday's District Council session by the District Male Councillor representing Labongo Sub-County,Juma Wahid Babyesiza,who presented the matter as one of public importance.

Wahid told the council that about 15 motorcycles have reportedly been stolen in Labongo Sub-County alone within the past four months,with some incidents allegedly involving the killing of motorcycle owners.

He described the situation as a growing security threat to motorcycle owners and called for the Resident District Commissioner,Darius Nandinda,to appear before council and explain the security situation in the district.

Wahid particularly wanted the RDC,as the district's head of security,to outline measures being taken to curb motorcycle theft and protect riders and owners from suspected robbers.

In response,District Council Speaker Bright Patrick Tibigambwa pledged to write to RDC Nandinda,requesting him to attend the next council sitting and respond to the concerns raised by councillors.

However,Tibigambwa asked Wahid to formally put his concerns in writing to provide an official record that can be forwarded to the RDC.

The Speaker further directed Wahid to submit a written motion on the matter so that council can discuss the rising motorcycle thefts extensively during the next plenary.

The council is expected to seek concrete security interventions as concerns grow over the safety of motorcycle owners and riders in Masindi District.
